Okay...three premises to this thread:
1) I like metal. 2) Everyone else on the planet should like metal too. 3) GD over there turned me on to Godsmack's Re-Align years ago, and I still have Re-Align on my MP3 player. So you're welcome.
Of course, one quirk or problem with metal music is that there are so many bloody subgenres of it. How many subgenres of pop rock are there? None. How many subgenres of country-western are there? Maybe one or two. How many subgenres of rap are there? A few. How many subgenres of metal are there? Well, let's see...Gothic metal, black metal, thrash metal, death metal, industrial metal, symphonic metal (aka. opera metal), acid metal, doom metal, funk metal, glam metal, nu metal, metalcore, post-metal, power metal, Viking metal, traditional heavy metal...arrrgh, my brain! *SPLOOCH*
But considering how some of these metal subgenres closely resemble other non-metal genres, I'm led to believe that some pinheads out there have identified metal less as its own genre and more as a code word meaning "any music with electric guitars in it". By their way of thinking, GWAR could do a rendition of the Sesame Street theme with two electic guitars, Jizmak the Gusher on drums and Balsac the Jaws of Death playing bass (and doing a masterful job of it, as he always does), and it could be considered metal...nevermind that it's the freakin' Sesame Street theme!
(Of course, I wouldn't put it past GWAR to try a stunt like that, either. Those guys are still certifiably insane after 20 years, and I hope to catch one of their live concerts before they retire or break up or get abducted by a huge cosmic horror that they accidentally summoned or something.)
So anyway, there we are. Some metal tunes and subgenres I like, some I love and some...well, I'd rather Q-Tip my ears with a Brillo pad than listen to the stuff. Yes, Napalm Death, I'm looking at you.
So however much or little my tastes may vary from yours, I thought I'd be a completely self-centered prig and shove one of my choice metal picks in your face anyway, every Friday (Saturday in Oz). Who knows? I may just turn you on to some new tune to stick into your iPod. After all, metal music is a musical style capable of expressing a ton of passion; that passion is usually some form of anger, of course, but you might be surprised by the spectrum of emotion which metal is capable of expressing...especially once we start wading into symphonic metal's territory. If you ever needed proof that electric guitars and pipe organs were made for each other--even if they were made about 500 years apart--symphonic metal is it. And it's still one of my favorite metal subgenres too.
Will any of these tunes end up in the House of Ainsley campaign? Hmmmmmaybe. It depends. But as anyone who ever played Castle of Dragon back in the arcades knows, quasi-medieval fantasy and electric power riffs go surprisingly well together. Try to mentally insert Godsmack's "I Stand Alone" in that arena scene with Maximus and the tigers the next time you watch Gladiator. Just try it.
And don't let me hog the stage here, now. Chat and discuss as you may.

*dies of bliss upon hearing this*
*ressurects self to hear it again....*
BTW, I have all of their albums
And Symphonic rock/metal is great. One of my most favorite of the metal genres.
Ever heard of Apocolyptica?
Trouble is, the Australian music scene isn't as rich and you'd want it to be. We simply don't get symphonic stuff over here. Especially european stuff. All the emo crap gets over here though *sigh*.
And I'm definitely going to keep on this topic cos its something very close to my heart.

Point of thought....
Does this song (Indestructable) pluck particular strings with you guys? (Ainsley and GD) as well as one of their other's (Deify)?

Mine too. With a tank full of Nightwish (Tarja era or Anette era), Tarja Turunen (post-Nightwish solo career), Within Temptation, After Forever, Stratovarius and E.S. Posthumus, I can go for miles and miles. I'm not sure if the German metal band E Nomine is symphonic metal or Gothic metal or what, and I'm fuzzy on what subgenre Rammstein typically plays (though a lot of it sounds like industrial metal), but I dig their tunes too. And GWAR...well, those guys are all over the map; compare "Letter from the Scallop Boat" with "I'm in Love (With a Dead Dog)", "Je M'appelle Jacque Cousteau", "Gonna Kill You", "Penile Drop", "Battle Lust" and "Immortal Corruptor" (in which Balsac digs in with a magnificent leading bass solo) and you'll see what I mean.

I don't see why not; help yourself! I was just trying to pace myself so the thread doesn't burn out too quickly, that's all. Metal tunes are a dime a dozen, but good metal tunes...not quite so plentiful.
(Yes, that's the nonexistent sound of me thrusting my accusing thumb at Napalm Death and Dimmu Borgir again. Sinergy too. I swear to Zeus, if you've heard one Sinergy song, you've already heard all of Sinergy's songs....)

Well, I've listened to Stupify, but it just doesn't grab me like Indestructible does. I have YouTube open in another window; I'll be right back.
...♪♫♪♫♪♫♪...
Yep...that'll do! I particularly dig the song's subtle slam on our nation's elected representatives. I don't care if they're Republicans, Democrats or friggin' Mugwumps; they're all corrupt, they're all foxes guarding the henhouse, they all suck, and if an alien meteor turned me into a superhuman tomorrow, I'd seriously consider turning supervillain just to throw the bums out (preferably way out, into the ocean), completely flatten the Capitol building, give Obama and Biden to the count of three to take off running before I start zapping them with my deadly eye lasers and fire breath, take over the White House and impose a new more-or-less benevolent monarchy just to get rid of this taxpayer-raping two-party system we have. A peasant like me, running the White House. Imagine the appalled gasps of utter terror from the mewling mouths of banker, lobbyist and career politician alike.
Okay, mini rant ends. Anyway, has it been a week already? Eh, close enough. So here's some of that Gothic metal I was talking about.
(Though I have to admit, I first discovered Tristania while I was skimming through Splatterhouse videos and found someone's animation, with Lionheart as the musical accompaniment. I still have a soft spot for the old Splatterhouse games, you see.)
Someone else did a better job, of course (goofy Play-Doh musculature notwithstanding).
Oh, wait a minute...a new Splatterhouse sequel, possibly launching this year! The trailer even has some snazzy metal to it, and I like how they've made Rick even more monstrous and indestructible. He even takes body damage from attacking monsters, like the video shows; he'll eventually grow back any torn-off limbs and missing chunks of skin and muscle if you let him take a little breather and stop getting repeatedly mauled by supernatural horrors.
I still don't like the goofy high-top sneakers, though; I think Rick just looked better without shoes for some reason.
Oh, cool! The new Jennifer is hot, and they're bringing back Biggy Man too! I wonder if they'll let you blow him away with the shotgun again; those chainsaw hands of his were serious business.
Okay, apologies for my trek down Video Game Nostalgia Lane. Back to you.

Well, go check out Apocolyptica. They're worth it. I particularily like "Path" from their album 'Cult'. I don't much like their tribute stuff - but their original music rocks!
Ummm...
Okay - splatterhouse and all that rolling on the floor laughing aside, the actual music clip wasn't too bad. Not too much into that sound though. I like my songs to be able to be understood... not sitting there scratching my head and wondering why the singer insists on swallowing the microphone and then spitting it back up. But that's just me. Song aside, the music taken by itself was fantastically awesome. Everything we love about metal.
By the way - in Germany Rammstein comes under "Dance Metal". Seems to fit - (*very loud whisper* they're awesome!)
Currently I've found two new bands whom I consider to be metal. Number one is Soulidium. Their entire debut album is polished and absolutely awesome. This is the song that introduced me to them - I typed in "Vampire songs" in the search at YouTube and this is what I got. It's called Live Forever. Bought the album and the rest is just FREAKIN AWESOME! Perhaps I'll share some others.
Oh warning, this video is their official video and does contain quite an amount of graphic gore. Watch at your peril... but listen. Close your eyes if you have to!
And the second is called Xandria. Again I'll give you the one that introduced me to this wonderful band. I think this particular song was done with the original singer.
It's called: Vampire.
Thoughts?

I applaud thy taste in music, dark maiden.
Xandria's Vampire there is definitely a winner in my book. It's like black metal, but with symphonic metal elements. Or would that be the other way around? And female vocals with reverb seal the deal there, too. Groovy.
Also, I just discovered something: my workplace here has four T1 lines, and my computer at the front desk is run through a router that blocks a ton of sites for various little offenses, real or imagined; the entirety of YouTube is blocked from my work computer, making the embedding of YouTube videos impossible. However, this lodge also maintains two computers for our guests--such as the one I'm on right now--each with its own T1 line...and, as I've just discovered, the guest computers do not block YouTube. Huzzah!
So here's a treat for anyone who used to enjoy Sega's hallmark arcade game Golden Axe: some guy took a bunch of tunes from Golden Axe and made a metal medley out of them! Double huzzah!
For some reason, I just love that shriek he puts in at the end of his rendition of The Battlefield (2:38 - 3:10).
(And what the heck is with Tyris Flare's right foot in that box art there? She looks like she broke her knee or something. Real legs don't twist like that! )
And in case that doesn't satisfy, here's some of that symphonic metal that I was talking about.
Too bad this computer doesn't have speakers. I could be embedding some horribly mislabeled polka music right now....
EDIT: Nevermind. I just noticed that the second guest computer has speakers behind the monitor, I switched computers and it's all good. Enjoy.

1) Man, Bodies is pretty big on the internet, isn't it?
2) The goat is indeed metal, and I'm presently grooving to his selection of Castlevania covers and remixes. The Scourge of 1691 medley alone covers pretty much every tune from the original Castlevania:
Poison Mind (the CV1 boss theme, and a fine retread it is) @ 0:06
Vampire Killer (Level 1) @ 1:14
Stalker (Level 2) @ 2:06
Wicked Child (Level 3, the stage with all the little hunchbacks who used to kick my ass constantly...) @ 3:43
Walking on the Edge (Level 4) @ 4:55 (and I love the mock plummet whistle they toss in at 4:53; I never understood why Simon wasn't killed by a fall like that...)
Heart of Fire (Level 5, and my favorite of all the Castlevania 1 tunes; I once got in trouble with my snotty old college piano teacher when I randomly started playing Heart of Fire during piano class...) @ 6:36 (with a snazzy lead-in starting at 6:21)
Out of Time (Level 6) @ 8:36
Nothing to Lose (the final battle with Dracula) @ 9:39 (and broken down into speed metal @ 10:59)
Black Night (the final battle, after Dracula shifts to his big white Beast form) @ 11:18
All Clear (Dracula's death) @ 11:56
Ending @ 12:01
That's it. I'm in love. I'm downloading this medley and adding it to my rather massive Castlevania collection as soon as I get home. Thanks, SEAMUS.
(If only the medley had included the Stage Clear ditty too. It was a brief little jingle of the tune, but it was an appreciable and very welcome little reward the first time I finally beat Frankenstein's Monster and Igor and cleared Level 4 after those two knocked the crap out of me about a hundred times....)
(And the reason that direct linking to his MP3's doesn't work is apparently because he includes parentheses in his URLs, which tends to throw forum links off. He might have even done this on purpose. Who can say?)
3) Heeey, metal with cellos! Excellent pick there, Shadow. I can see why Wraith recommended Apocalyptica now; I kinda wish I hadn't forgotten to hunt them down on YouTube after her suggestion back there. I may need to rectify that.
Oh...I guess I'd better add a tune for this week, huh?
Cradle of Filth: Her Ghost in the Fog (short version with a cool video)
Full Version:
Band: Cradle of Filth Subgenre: Black Metal
What I dig about a typical Cradle of Filth tune: the Gothy instrumentals, the black metal instrumentals, the back-up vocals (male and female alike), the band's zaniness in general (sure, they're still no GWAR when it comes to crazy public behavior, but that big public debacle with them selling the masturbating nun tee shirts--which led to an uproar and protests from the Catholics, which in turn led to a massed counterprotest at the Vatican with oodles of CoF fans and a few of the band members wearing "I Love Satan" tee shirts--definitely ranks up there somewhere. Talk about some ballsy behavior there... ).
What I don't dig: Dani's lead vocals whenever he gets into his high-pitched tuneless screeching. Make it stop, make it stop...!
But if you can get over Dani's screeching, it's all good. And I'll give the man this: he does have a huge vocal range. And apparently he even had his name legally changed from Daniel Davey to Dani Filth; I guess that's one way to prove your dedication to the band....

Dang it...I'm a little late, huh? Don't worry...it's not one of those metal tunes from the later Castlevania games.
I'm saving those for next week. Really.
So hey, more symphonic metal. Back to that dominant Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish (whom you may or may not have heard about), their lead female vocalist used to be Tarja Turunen. Then something happened which caused a riff between her and the rest of the band, and the rest of the band basically kicked her out and started looking for a new female lead (eventually finding Anette Olzen, a Swedish singer whom you probably noticed in last week's Amaranth video one post ago...and, you know, the video below too). And Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish's chief songwriter and keyboardist, as also seen below) composed this number allegedly as a way of telling Tarja, "Buh-bye, don't let the door hit you on your way out":
(Gah! The men keep morphing into women and back again! I can't tell if I'm supposed to be aroused or not! )
Tuomas claims that the rumors about Bye Bye Beautiful being written with such underlying intent are false, of course. This video was also composed to poke fun at the rumors that Anette was only brought into the band because of her good looks. But, you know, rumors are persistent little devils....
Meanwhile, Tarja, sans Nightwish, embarked on a solo career. And she allegedly wrote this number to tell Tuomas and the rest of Nightwish, "Aw, hell with you guys. I don't need you anyway":
I think she's off to a good start.
So yeah, I'm giving you guys a two-for-one special this week.
Don't you just love it when band members have bitter spats and split up?

Ack! I'm late, I'm late for a somewhat important date!
Here's one of my absolute favorite metal tunes, and the kicker? It's not in English. In fact, it's not even in a real language!
...and yet I can't help but shake and groove whenever my Sims leave the stereo playing while they run off to the shopping mall, come home and catch Man's Fire piping out of the five-story house's numerous stereo speakers which were all bought from Mom's collections as a cult leader and Dad's earnings as a superhero or an astronaut or whatever.
(It helps that I play with Aging turned off, but other than that, I'm just that damn good. And yet there's something terribly depressing about bossing around families of little computer people who are all wealthier and more successful than I myself will ever be. )
In fact, I've built a few of those shopping malls with nothing but metal music piped in, in hopes of catching Man's Fire while my single mother or my college punk or my urban ninja or my lesbian roommates or my intrepid trio of ghost-hunting occultists are shopping around for fruit and video games. Catch the fever.
So if anyone else has any favorite tunes that just so happen to be sung in Simlish, they're as legal as anything else. Let's hear 'em.

Stratovarius: Power metal with symphonic metal elements, or symphonic metal with power metal elements? You decide.
I own two Stratovarius CDs, Elements Part 1 and Elements Part 2. This two-parter album has a nifty theme to it: songs styled after the classic Four Elements of the Old World. Most of the songs on Part 1 are related to Fire and Water, while most of the songs on Part 2 are related to Earth and Air...with a few exceptions; Stratofortress on Part 1 (an instrumental power metal/speed metal piece with high-octave guitar riffs and a very high tempo) is clearly an Air song, and Elements here manages to tag all four (along with four elements of emotion, which I thought was a nice touch).
Unfortunately, Elements is over 12 minutes song, and YouTube videos cut off at 10 minutes and 59 seconds, hence the abrupt end at 10:51 here...which is a shame, as we miss some good instrumentals and lyrics which come after that mark.
Well, you'll just have to buy the CD, I guess. Suffice it to say that Stratovarius creates a lot of long songs; you'll never get a heap of weakling three-minute pop-culture-sized songs out of these guys, believe you me.

So is it time for you to come back yet? We miss our Wraith....
And down here in Canton, Texas, another First Monday Trade Days week draws to a close! It'll be good to relax again.
And this week (a couple of days late for me, I know), it's Swamped by Lacuna Coil! Yay!
The official video (with kind of icky quality and a truncated guitar lead-in):
...and the song--all good and proper--as it is during the credits scroll at the end of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines:
"Hey, Ainsley! Isn't that your YouTube account?"
Why yes, yes it is. I recorded this after playing through the game with my Tremere (Circe Jones), beating Prince LaCroix and his hulking Nagloper Sheriff, and revealing LaCroix's treacherous ambitions to Regent Strauss (the Tremere Primogen of Los Angeles) and the rest of the Primogen council, thus removing LaCroix from power and leaving him to be tried and sentenced by the Camarilla's Inner Circle and/or the next Archon to breeze through Los Angeles.
There are five endings to Bloodlines (seven if you count the two subendings where you choose to open the Ankaran Sarcophagus yourself instead of leaving it to Prince LaCroix). This "rainy" credits scroll is only seen if you reach either the Camarilla ending (described above) or the Kuei-Jin ending (where you betray both the Camarilla and the Anarchs to side with the Oriental vampires, only for the Kuei-Jin to betray you in turn...); in these two endings, the Ankaran Sarcophagus is never opened, and the bomb which Smiling Jack planted inside it is never triggered and detonated.
But there are three other endings: the Anarch ending (where you side with the Anarchs instead of the Camarilla and help them bring down LaCroix and push back the Camarilla), the LaCroix ending (where you forgive LaCroix for calling the Blood Hunt on you and follow him through his mad ambitions...) and the No Allegiance ending (where you take Caine's advice to forsake both the Anarchs and the Camarilla, bring down LaCroix singlehandedly and forge your own legend). These endings are all resolved when the Ankaran Sarcophagus is opened and Smiling Jack's bomb detonates, obliterating LaCroix and the Camarilla's headquarters in Los Angeles.
In the Anarch and No Allegiance endings, after taking up a letter opener and stabbing the hell out of LaCroix, you face a choice: either hand the key to the Sarcophagus over to LaCroix (like he wanted in the first place) or use the key to open the Sarcophagus yourself. This is essentially a choice between your vampire's survival and your vampire's Final Death; give the key to LaCroix and you're well out of the Venture Tower by the time the badly wounded LaCroix crawls over to the Sarcophagus and opens it, but open the Sarcophagus yourself (in expectation of finding a nice old Antediluvian to diablerize instead of, say, a bomb...) and your vampire dies with LaCroix in a huge, fiery explosion. But in the LaCroix ending, you have no such choice; your vampire and LaCroix open the Sarcophagus together, and your vampire shares LaCroix's fate.
Whatever the path you take, though, if the Sarcophagus is opened, the Lacuna-Coil-playing credits scroll features fiery gouts from the explosion and the ensuing conflagration falling from the tower instead of rain. I was in the process of running through the game again with my Nosferatu (Ursula Jaeger) and recording the "fiery rain" credits scroll with her, but I had to uninstall Bloodlines before I could get that far, in order to make room for new programs (including Age of Conan...more on that game later). But I kept the game saves from Bloodlines. Perhaps later, once I get a bigger hard drive, Ursula Jaeger will kill Ming Xiao and the Sheriff and pay LaCroix a nasty little visit. And then, kaBOOM!
One day, perhaps. One day.
Anyway, enjoy the music.

Yeah, I missed a month of metal tunes (mostly because I was worried sick about Wraith going missing...ahem, nudge nudge). So here's a little mash-up for you to enjoy.
First off, back to Metalocalypse we go. WEEEEEE!!!
It's quite a rarity that an Adult Swim cartoon gives us real metal songs and spawns a real band, real albums, real music videos and a real official YouTube channel, but there you have it. Some of my favorite Dethklok tunes from the series:
The Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle (This one still cracks me up everytime I sit through it. Hell, I haven't tasted a drop for a decade or two--simply because I can't stand the taste of the stuff--but I'm about to start drinking coffee again after watching this.... )
Go Into the Water (From the Season 1 finale)
Black Fire Upon Us (From the Season 2 finale)
Dethharmonic
Castratikron (The moral of the story: Women are evil. )
Hatredcopter (Hey, we finally get to hear Pickles sing! Nathan can't have all the fun.... )
The Fan Song (...and if you think the song rocks, you should watch the episode it comes in. Because watching an obese, extortive, song-pirating jerkwad of a quasi-fan in an electric wheelchair having to run a gauntlet of sniper fire after his similarly jerkwaddish brother just ate a rifle slug is a beautiful lesson on just desserts. )
Volcano
Thunderhorse
The Cyborg Slayers
Go Forth and Die (Having gone through eight years of grade school, four years of high school and two years of college only to earn diddly-jack squat, I can relate to this one. )
Burn the Earth
I Tamper With the Evidence at the Murder Site of Odin
Murmaider II: The Water God
Crush My Battle Opponent's Balls (An instrumental. And I wish I could play guitar like that. It takes on a whole new shade of epic when you're watching Skwisgaar fight a bunch of friggin' dragons with the power of his mighty guitar, too.) ("Get this guy out of here! Find me a dragon!" )
(Heh heh heh...I just thought I'd throw this clip in somewhere. )
*pant pant pant*
...Have I caught up yet?

There. Tada!

1) Yes, you have. And we have missed your contributions as well.
2) Why, thank you.
3) It was the Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle that brought this praise on, wasn't it?
Oh, is it time for another metal tune of the week? Okay. I think I've babbled about my love for GWAR on these forums once or twice, but I have yet to cough up a good GWAR tune in this thread.
Here's where I fix that.
And all those supposed metal fans who claim that the electric bass guitar is the weakest link of any metal band really need to listen to GWAR in general--and to Immortal Corruptor in particular, and to Immortal Corruptor's bass-heavy lead-in in very particular particular--and shut the [funk] up. Beefcake the Mighty rides that bass like a raging dinosaur on angel dust, let me tell you.
Also, you know how paranoid YouTube has gotten about copyrights ever since they sold out to Google? Yeah, I just had to replace that last Metalocalypse video back there (the one with Skwisgaar jumping out of the helicopter) because YouTube killed the video I had embedded originally; fortunately, for every video that YouTube's overzealous staff shoots down, another pops up in its place. So finding a replacement video wasn't hard. Let's see how long this video lasts before it gets the axe.
I just have to watch that video over and over, simply because of how realistic Skwisgaar's animated movements are...Skwisgaar's left hand low on the fretboard for the high notes and high on the fretboard for the low notes, et al. Brendon Small is the creative force behind Metalocalypse; he's also the lead vocalist and guitarist for the real Dethklok band, as well as a voice actor and vocalist for the animated virtual Dethklok band from the TV show (in particular, he's the voices for the characters Nathan Explosion and Pickles, both of whom are singing back-to-back in Hatredcopter back there...which just shows how broad and versatile Small's vocal range is). Yes, that's him playing lead guitar in that song, too. How many metal bands have a frontman who sings and plays an instrument simultaneously? Yeah, Brendon Small's a friggin' metal lord. So if anyone should know how a guitarist's hands move while playing, it's him.
Hmm. We should toss in some metal trivia questions while we're milling around here, huh?

Ehh... I haven't contributed... so, here's some Apocolyptica with the classic "Hall of the Mountain King"
I dare your fingers not to ache after watching this....
And here's a better version with full band at their back and better composition. Its from their Life Burns Tour.

I take it that cellos are Apocalyptica's "thing".
Also, you're going to love this week's tune, in both its versions.
For your television:
For your DVD player:
Admit it. You grooved out, too.
The Power Rangers are shuckin' metal.
