Okay, I found this, I had to share, because I've had the end result of this, and let me tell you, it's the funniest damn thing in the world.

A father passing by his son's bedroom was astonished to see that his bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then he saw an envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow that was addressed to 'Dad.'

With the worst premonition he opened the envelope with trembling hands and read the letter.

Dear Dad:

It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with mom and you.

I have been finding real passion with Karon and she is so nice. But I knew that you would not approve of her because of all her piercing, tattoos, tight motorcycle clothes and the fact that she is much older than I am. But it's not only the passion.. Dad she's pregnant. Karon said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter.

We share a dream of having many more children. Karon has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people that live nearby for cocaine and ecstasy. In the meantime we will pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Karon can get better.

She deserves it.

Don't worry Dad. I'm 15 and I know how to take care of myself. Some day I'm sure that we will be back to visit so that you can get to know your grandchildren.

Love, Your Son John

PS. Dad, none of the above is true. I'm over at Tommy's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the report card that's in my center desk drawer.

I love you.

Call me when it's safe to come home.

GD there may remember some of these riddles from our years in Montana, crowding a shoddy old pool table and rolling a bunch of funny-shaped dice around.... Very Happy

*ahem*

• • •

The floor's above, the roof's beneath,
And from this place I cannot leave.
Yet with the passing of the days,
A new horizon greets my gaze.

(Where am I?)

Aboard a ship

• • •

Sometimes I seem so solid
Yet move about as mist.
I creep inside closed boxes and
Inside your tightened fist.
You see me best when you can't see,
For I do not exist.

(What am I?)

Darkness

• • •

The pauper has, the wise man craves,
The miser spends, the spendthrift saves,
The madman fears, the coward braves,
And all men carry to their graves.

(What is it?)

Nothing

• • •

Ten men's length.
Ten men's strength.
Ten men cannot break it,
Yet a child can come and take it.

(What is it?)

• • •

My absence kills. My excess kills.
And all life comes at my command.
My blows turn mighty earthen crags
To so much shifting golden sand.
Ambitious flames preturb me not
And perish once beneath my hand.
The sun recedes. I ride the wind.
My chill falls white across the land.

(What am I?)

• • •

Thirty white ivory towers
Between the two red hills.
They chop and clash and crush and smash,
And then their fury stills.

(What are they?)

Teeth

• • •

Devils And Rogues Know Nothing Else, Save Starlight.

(What is it?)

• • •

Okay, that's enough for now. Peace! Very Happy

The floor's above, the roof's beneath,
And from this place I cannot leave.
Yet with the passing of the days,
A new horizon greets my gaze.

(Where am I?)

Light Socket?

Thirty white ivory towers
Between the two red hills.
They chop and clash and crush and smash,
And then their fury stills.

(What are they?)

Teeth

The pauper has, the wise man craves,
The miser spends, the spendthrift saves,
The madman fears, the coward braves,
And all men carry to their graves.

(What is it?)

Time?

And last but not least:

Sometimes I seem so solid
Yet move about as mist.
I creep inside closed boxes and
Inside your tightened fist.
You see me best when you can't see,
For I do not exist.

(What am I?)

Darkness?

I'm afraid we don't carry time to our graves, dear. On the contrary, that's usually when time's run out. Wink

(Another classic...)

Round she is, yet flat as boards.
Altar of the Lupine Lords.
Pearl on black velvet, jewel in the sea.
Unchanged, yet e'er changing eternally.

With a bright nose.
The longer she stands,

You eat something you neither plant nor plow.
It is the child of water, but if water it touches, it dies.

Bury them deep.
Pile on stones.

Dig up their bones.

What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,

I'm driven away by feathers.
I'm lurking under your bed.
In time I always return, you see,
But bite me and you're dead.

(And if you don't mind getting a little Biblical...)

I'm one of five.
I'm not alive.
The one who sent me became a king,
And the one who received me died.

A man of one-hundred stood out in the cold,
Exchanged his gay headdress of colors most bold
For one of pure ivory, just a day old.
But though freshly dressed, the old man stood alone.
It was his misfortune to live in a wold.

Alas, there's really nothing golden about a comet, literally or metaphorically. It's more silver or white platinum than gold, to the eye, and historical superstitions have far more often painted comets as ill omens or bringers of doom...not very endearing. A comet does have a head and a tail without anything resembling a body, however, so you made a good guess there. But this riddle remains on the table. Sad

Good work, you two. Keep it up! I'll even go back and add another riddle from my old Dragon-magazine-reading days while I'm scratching three more riddles off the list.... bounce
