"Macho Man" Randy Savage was killed by a one-two heart attack/car crash combo over a month back, and I just found out about it two days ago.
After I left the Air Force in 1996, I ended up working as a janitor at a McDonald's in Hazelwood, MO for several months, just until something better came along. I had worked there as a teenager before leaving for college, and one of the day managers in 1996 was a line cook I had worked with back around 1988, so he helped shoo me in. There was a TV in the break room, it was always on and it was usually set to some pro wrestling program whenever I came in on break. And because half the line cooks and cashiers all went on break at the same time (around 2:00 PM), we'd all sit around the TV, watch pro wrestling and trade running commentaries about it.
Even when I was a little pre-teen, I never bought into the whole "kayfabe" thing; I knew that pro wrestling was staged soon after I started watching it. Do you think that any grown man could survive having Andre the Giant do a butt drop onto his head without Andre pulling his punches (or butt drops)? Neither did I. But it was fun to watch all the same. And then when they started adding drama to the pro wrestling programs, it became what Spider Jerusalem of Transmetropolitan once called "phallocentric soap opera for retards". Things got hilarious.
So even though Andre the Giant was out of the picture by 1996 (since death tends to have that effect on one's career...happy trails, Fezzik), I found a new icon to focus on: Macho Man Randy Savage. Even though Savage had had a pro wrestling career for about as long as I've been alive, this was when he really started kicking his stage presence into overdrive, including (but not limited to) the "OHHHH, YEAHHHH!" bellow which became his calling card. This was right around the time when the Macho Man was feuding with Diamond Dallas Page and Kimberly, and for some reason I remember the episode where Page was up in the ring with Elizabeth, talking smack about Savage and blabbering about busting his leg or something. Then Kimberly got into it and started badmouthing Savage too. So, of course, that's right around the time when Savage popped up out of the crowd with a "HOLD ON THERE, LITTLE GIRL!" and started talking about how he and Kimberly had had an affair behind DDP's back, and then he started dogging her about that. And for whatever reason, his closing words are still etched into my brain to this day. "KIMBERLEEEEEEE! Stop WRITING MEEEE. Stop CALLING MEEEE. Youuuuu...WISH you had the MAH...CHO...MEEEEYANNNN!!!"
The man had a stage personality, no doubt.
So imagine how giddy I was to watch a Slim Jim commercial some time later and see that they'd replaced the weird stick-meat-haired guy with Macho Man Randy Savage. And then came another commercial, and another...including one with Savage slamming some regular skinny guy around in a wrestling cage, trussing him up like a turkey and bellowing like a water buffalo. "SAY IT! SAY IT!" "SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM!"
And then came his appearance in the Spider-Man movie, which was another shot of coolness.
*sigh*
So...what stuff has made you sad lately?

The fact that my career is coming to an end and that I'm likely going to serve that last year in Korea.
Worse than that, their's a good chance that Obama will end up signing my retirement order...and that makes me sad.

Tough break that Obama will sign your retirement order. What makes me sad is fact that little childern are murdered everyday in this country and their parents or those who comitt the crime get away with it

Well if Obama gets the boot, then I might squeak by with whoever takes his place, assuming he is voted out of course. If not, then I'll suck it up. He is still my President and the order is about my success, not his.
The courts did their job, let it go with that. I just want the damn trial off my TV screen.

Damn. That's even rough for me to hear. It doesn't seem like too long ago that we were in the day room, getting the SPs called on us because we were screaming in-character over D&D or whatever, and someone down the hall thought that someone else was in there getting murdered.
If only the party could last forever, huh?
And yeah, you'd think that other judges would learn from Judge Lance Ito's mistake and keep the media the hell out of the courtroom, instead of letting the tabloids turn the whole thing into a circus. It's a murder trial, for butt's sake. Murder trials are not and shouldn't be A) entertainment, B) a way to sell more magazines, and C) a way to sell more photographs to the magazines.
Well, here's some promising news, though: I finally met Chris last week after a storm knocked out the power to the Grand Lodge where I work. He's the guy who blocked Illusion Vale from my workplace. And it turns out that he's an old D&D player too, and he himself didn't see any problem with me logging onto IV at work. What's more, the head honcho who gave him the order to block IV is gone, and the Front Desk supervisor who asked the head honcho to tell Chris to block IV is gone too. I'm wondering if this means that there's any chance that Chris could lift the block so I can go back to posting and updating during those long, boring hours around 3:00 AM.
I'm still trying to get back to posting and updating here in my off time, too. But today I had a husky jump one of my fences and get into the chicken run (but my second cousin Sam stopped the dog before it could get at my chickens). So now I have to build a higher fence. I might even invest in one of those large coyote traps while I'm at it, just to be sure.
The new breeding pens are still coming along, as is the attic work. Man, I have too many home improvement projects going on. That kind of makes me sad too.
