PostSubject: Expanding the Pantheon   Expanding the Pantheon Icon_minitimeWed Sep 26, 2012 9:10 pm

So for a while now, I've been considering expanding our current pantheon. It's worth noting that most of the gods in the Third Edition of Dungeons & Dragons are lifted directly from the World of Greyhawk setting; to wit, those gods include our own Pelor, Kord, Heironeous, Hextor, Boccob, Obad-Hai, Ehlonna, Fharlanghn, Olidammara, Saint Cuthbert, Wee Jas, Nerull and Erythnul. Vecna is also native to the World of Greyhawk, but only as a power-hungry lich striving for absolute power, a goal he would not come close to attaining (in the form of godhood) until D&D 3, after his brief and near-disastrous stay in the Ravenloft setting (where he almost wrecked the entire Demiplane of Dread in his efforts to conquer it, forcing the Dark Powers themselves to personally kick him out and block him from ever returning).

Of the rest of the gods, most of those are lifted from D&D's Forgotten Realms setting; these include Moradin, Corellon Larethian, Garl Glittergold, Yondalla, Gruumsh, Lolth, Laduguer and Sekolah. Orcus also exists in the Forgotten Realms but, as in D&D 3, he remains a demon prince and a lord of the undead...not quite a god, but still powerful enough to be worth the faith and worship of those depraved enough to follow him.

The rest of D&D 3's pantheon--and our campaign's pantheon--is pretty much the gods who are exclusive to D&D 3 and the Libris Mortis book in particular: Afflux, Doresain and Evening Glory.

I've also played years of Neverwinter Nights and its many servers, most of which are based on the Forgotten Realms. So maybe I've simply been spoiled by the very expansive pantheon which the Forgotten Realms setting has to offer, but I do feel that the standard D&D pantheon is a bit thin, and there are plenty of roles and providences which our current pantheon leaves vacant. And so, as I did when I imported the Devourer (Corwin's god) from the Eberron setting, I thought that I'd put it up to a poll and see which Forgotten Realms gods y'all might want added to our pantheon.

(...not all of them, of course; the Forgotten Realms setting also has plenty of redundant gods, as well as gods whose roles have already been filled by Greyhawk's gods. We already have Yondalla as the goddess of the harvest; even if she is a halfling goddess, do we really need Chauntea filling that same role? And while Bane may be attractive as a god of tyranny and strife, Hextor has already beaten him to the job.)

On with the exposition! bounce

Auril, goddess of the deep winter
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Domains: Air, Death, Evil
At the ends of the world, where night is long and ice and snow lie eternal, Auril reigns. Once a faerie princess whose heart turned to ice in the truest sense, her dominion is the killing cold snap, the pounding showers of ice and sleet, the avalanche which swallows entire mountain villages, the blinding blizzard which leads wanderers to their doom and the springtime which never comes. In a recent age, her frozen lands have given rise to the bleakborn, a new breed of undead spawned from those who perished to the bitter cold, rising again in a neverending, desperate and ultimately futile effort to warm themselves by leeching every measure of warmth from living bodies until only cold flesh remains.
(No extra notes for Auril here, save that she might find her usual ally in Umberlee (below) while Obad-Hai endlessly strives to check her efforts to freeze all the world in one big, endless winter. Enjoy!)

Bahamut and Tiamat, gods of the dragons
Alignments: Lawful Good (Bahamut) and Lawful Evil (Tiamat)
Domains: Good, Law, Luck, Protection (Bahamut) or Destruction, Evil, Law (Tiamat)
Even dragons and their gods are not without their familial rivalries. For millenia have Bahamut and his sister Tiamat presided over dragonkind, with Bahamut as the king of all metallic dragons, and Tiamat as the queen of all chromatic dragons. Though there are some morally neutral exceptions among the draconic races, the two factions tend to gravitate towards the morality of their parents, with dragons of silver and gold keeping concord with "lesser" creatures such as humans and elves and at times protecting them from the red dragons and green dragons who forever seek to devour them and leave their settlements in smouldering ruins. Cults devoted to the worship of these dragon gods have even appeared among such humanoid races, whether to thank Bahamut for his wisdom and protection or to appease Tiamat and perhaps turn her baleful attentions elsewhere.
(I've looked through my rulebooks--including the Monster Manual and its entry on dragons--without finding any references to Bahamut or Tiamat, so here they are. I still disagree with the Forgotten Realms details about them being lesser deities and servants to human gods, seeing as they're freaking dragon gods. So if they make it in, I'll be exercising the power of Make It So and giving them both promotions and no masters but themselves. On an unrelated note, Bahamut and Tiamat have their roots in our own world's Arabic and Babylonian mythologies, so they can join Ilmater and Loviatar (below) in the mythological pedigree club.)

Eilistraee, elven goddess of song, beauty and the moon
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Domains: Chaos, Charm, Good
Eilistraee is the daughter of the elf-father Corellon Larethian and the drow-mother Lolth, born in the age before her parents turned from lovers to dire enemies. When Corellon Larethian forever banished the treacherous Lolth and her elves from the sunlit world and into the Underdark below, Eilistraee chose to join her mother in her banishment, so that those drow elves who somehow find the strength to break free from Lolth's web of eternal darkness might find the hope of goodness and redemption through her. Thus far, Lolth has failed to bring her daughter to heel despite her most cunning machinations, and Lolth's faithful and Eilistraee's faithful continue to hunt and slay each other, in darkness and by moonlight, with the fiercest of passions.
(Curiously enough, our present pantheon has no god or goddess of the moon, so Eilistraee would fill this needful void quite nicely. And while the Forgotten Realms pantheon also includes the more popular moon goddess Selûne, I find Eilistraee to be the more poetic, intriguing and interesting of the two. Feel free to speak up if you disagree and would rather see Selûne included here instead.)

Gond, god of artifice and invention
Alignment: True Neutral
Domains: Earth, Fire, Knowledge
Though often seen as a more human deity, Gond showers his favor on gnomes, whose penchant for invention and creation pleases him. His worship is found in practically every race, every nation and every social class which prizes creativity and superb craftmanship, whether eclectic human inventors, elven bowyers, dwarven smiths, gnomes who meld sorcery with peculiar clockwork, orcish warlords forever seeking to build a better siege machine, and beyond.
(Moradin and Gond are alike in some ways and different in others; while Moradin also embodies the strength and honor inherent to his dwarven children, Gond eagerly welcomes all races to build, create and invent for him. Moradin also favors the tried and true, while Gond constantly experiments and innovates. Whether such works serve good, evil, order or chaos means nothing to Gond; their craftmanship and ingenuity are all that matter in the endless pursuit of artifice.)

Ilmater, god of mercy and martyrdom
Alignment: Lawful Good
Domains: Good, Healing, Law, Strength
Ilmater's compassion lies with those who suffer in the name of righteousness and with those who must endure the torments inflicted by the sadistic. He takes upon himself the agony of those who suffer needlessly and thus eases them of their pain, while those dark hearts who delight in torture and cruelty may inherit his terrible wrath.
(In the Forgotten Realms setting, Ilmater and Loviatar (see below) are bitter enemies, and bystanders often become pawns, tormented and relieved in turns, in the endless war between their clerics and champions. Curiously enough, Ilmater and Loviatar also originate from our own world's Finnish pantheon, two rare examples of gods from our own world's legends who, unlike the likes of Zeus and Thor, have slipped into D&D's pantheons unchallenged.)

Loviatar, goddess of pain and torture
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Domains: Evil, Law, Strength
Mercy is for the weak, and pain is the crucible in which the weak are broken and the strong are forged. So says the Church of Loviatar, whose goddess is the embodiment of all the world's cruelty, suffering and torment. Her highest priests are master torturers who can inflict shooting agony with the gentlest caress, while her blackguards are frightening and demented sadomasochists who equate pain with ecstasy, flogging themselves into bloody, orgasmic frenzies before madly hurling themselves forth to do likewise to their enemies.
(Without Bane, Loviatar may find a worthy ally in Hextor instead, as the yoke of tyranny burdens many hearts with torment and restlessness. Her dominion may overlap in places with that of Afflux, but while Afflux tortures for the sake of revelation, Loviatar tortures for the sake of sheer sadism and power over her victims. Afflux is also a patron of the undead, whose numb bodies offer little delight for Loviatar's torturers; some Loviatans, however, see such a state as a challenge and occupy themselves with finding creative new ways to inflict torment on the undead, which may invite Afflux's ire in the doing.)

Sune, goddess of love and beauty
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Domains: Chaos, Charm, Good, Trickery
Though somewhat vain and prideful, Sune is never without praise and kind words for others, and she compels her faithful to behave likewise. She and her own hold true the tenet that love conquers all, and they oppose those reckless and ruinous gods who take twisted pleasure in marring or destroying all that is beautiful in the world, prefering to disarm such foes through grace and cunning rather than through the crudity of brute force.
(Sune may overlap slightly with Evening Glory, but bear in mind that Evening Glory is the goddess of love beyond death, while Sune is the goddess of love in all its forms. Evening Glory is also a matron of the undead, for whom Sune extends little or naught in the way of love or welcome. The bloodstained god Erythnul, like his analogues in the Forgotten Realms, can expect Sune's own to challenge and undermine the rampages of his followers at every turn.)

Tempus, god of war
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Domains: Chaos, Protection, Strength, War
Wherever wholescale war is waged among kingdoms and nations, Tempus is there, ready to guide the tides of battle in favor of the most worthy. Caring little for causes or nationalities, he extends his blessings to the strongest souls and the sharpest tactical minds. And many a battlefield resounds with the songs, chants and prayers invoking his favor well before the battle to come actually begins.
(While Heironeous and Hextor may serve as de facto war gods, the wars between the two are predominantly the clashes between good and evil. Tempus cares little for these concerns, as his dominion is war itself--in all its forms and causes--and the strength, prowess, courage and guile of the warriors who must do battle, whether for lords and nations, for gods or for ideals. At times, this results in Tempus-blessed warriors from both sides meeting each other in the heart of a pitched battle, which serves Tempus' glory all the greater.)

Tyr, god of law and justice
Alignment: Lawful Good
Domains: Good, Knowledge, Law, War
Tyr and his priests concern themselves with protecting the innocent, punishing the guilty and enforcing the laws of the land, so long as those laws are just, fair and benevolent. Wicked lands with wicked lords curry not Tyr's favor but instead invite the scorn of his priests and paladins, who will do all they can to push back the hand of tyranny and bring about justice for all.
(In the absence of Bane, the tyrant god Hextor would provide a worthy nemesis for Tyr, and vice-versa. Though Heironeous and Saint Cuthbert may court the fringes of Tyr's dominion as far as punishing the wicked and smiting evil, neither uphold or embody the law and the power of justice like Tyr does.)

Umberlee, goddess of the sea's fury
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Domains: Chaos, Destruction, Evil, Water
The sea holds countless terrors--ravenous sharks, colossal krakens, towering tidal waves, ruinous hurricanes and waterspouts, whirlpools large enough to swallow ships, the drowning depths themselves and more--and Umberlee is mother to them all. Even the most lawful and the most good among seafarers are known to toss their pouches of gold into the water with their prayers before embarking on long voyages, in hopes of placating Umberlee and staying her doombringing hand. Unlike the clerics of other evil gods, Umberlee's priests openly walk the streets of many port towns without fear, for so great is the seafarers' fear of courting Umberlee's wrath and perishing in the deep many leagues from the safety of land. Umberlee is a jealous and covetous goddess, and membership in the Church of Umberlee is for life and beyond, for Umberlant clerics who betray Umberlee or try to leave her Church invariably turn up dead, their drowned lungs mysteriously filled with briny sea water no matter how far from the sea they fled.
(Auril and Umberlee--along with the storm god Talos and the predator god Malar--comprise the Gods of Fury or Deities of Fury, a quartet of evil gods who kill and destroy through storms, more storms and other magnificent and horrible displays of their power. Even without Talos and Malar around, Auril and/or Umberlee represent the dark side of Mother Nature quite capably, and Obad-Hai may have fairly agreeable relations with Umberlee just as Istishia and Silvanus--Obad-Hai's Forgotten Realms equivalents--do. For want of Malar, the Devourer can serve Malar's role quite well; Sekolah and the Devourer also claim dominion over all sharks, but neither of them can command the tempests and the tides like Umberlee does.)

Forgive me if I waxed on and on about Loviatar and Umberlee; I played a longstanding Blackguard of Loviatar on one Neverwinter Nights server, I played an even longer-standing and far more powerful Cleric of Umberlee on another server, and I loved playing both of them and I still miss playing them. But I learned a lot about both goddesses just from playing those two characters. My dwarven Cleric/Wizard of Gond was no slouch either. Smile

Anyway, there are the ten options for this poll. It's multiple choice, so feel free to pick any and all gods whom you think would be useful, engrossing and invigorating additions to the standard D&D 3 pantheon. Any god who racks up three or more votes gets in. Feel free to use this thread to talk your decisions and decision-making over with everyone else here. And this may not be the last poll of this kind, so don't hesitate to toss in any suggestion-worthy gods you might have on your mind.

So now we have two votes for Loviatar, no votes for Ilmater and one vote for everyone else.

I'm just kind of wondering why you two voters chose what you chose. This topic could be ripe for idle discussion here. bounce

Sorry about the long silence, end of the fiscal year thing.

Anyway, I voted for all of them and must have missed the block for Ilmater. Mostly, I just figured, 'the more, the merrier' really. Gives us more options to fit our characters into and more to learn, react to and role play with.

All except Bahamut and Tiamat. I voted for them because they're dragons. Nuff said.

I'm sure that the whole "two gods for the price of one" detail didn't hurt, either. Wink

Good points, though. Variety is the spice of life, though some players might not want too much variety. But that's what this poll's all about: to get a feel for what the players (or at least the majority of them) want.

On that note, I really should get on Steam and flag SEAMUS down again; I haven't seen him on City of Heroes either, so I'm wondering what he's been up to. And how has Jazman been lately? Smile

I see you lurking there, Tiger! Two cents. Hand 'em over. Razz

I will not give you my two cents. You can't have them. You cannot make me tell you anything about my choice. I will not tell you that I picked Loviatar because of the whole "pain is weekness leaving the body" thing.

I will also not tell you that I find it funny that the first letter of her name are LOV and those are the first three letters of the word love. I will not tell you that I find that ironic.

So there try as you might you will not get my two cents worth. Take that. Besides if I gave you my two cents for your thoughts I would want my change back.

Ah, but Loviatar and Sune are "girls" too. Technically, so is Tiamat (despite the whole "I'm a five-headed dragon" thing). Very Happy
