It was dark and stormy, as most nights in stories like this are. The tavern was dank and dark, the perfect place for those undesirables who wanted to stay dry but definitely not sober. The tavern keeper himself looked like the sort you didn't want to cross paths with. His thick hairy arms were uncovered and the corded muscles flexed as he idly polished glassed that was so greasy, he was only really just pushing the dirt around.

There was no music, not in a bar like this. The kind of dive either had a bawdy lass singing in tone that were barely tolerable and songs that were designed to heat the men's blood. But Starrie was sick tonight, come down with a fever and Orin didn't want to mess around with his wife's favourite girl.

Speaking of the wife... Roaring into the kitchen he told her to get on with the food. Not that there was much. There never was much food. Not for his establishment, anyway. No, the patrons here almost never came for food. It was drink they wanted. And it was drink he served. Snorting against his sleep, he pushed some more dirt around, this time on the grimy bar between him and some of the other patrons.

It was dark and he couldn't see or even hear most of what went on beyond that small wooden counter. But he knew what kind of men his bar attracted and so settled for not knowing anything. The less he knew, the better. And the more gold he would be alive to make.

The wind howled past the casements and rattled the loose boards that make up the divehole. But he didn't worry, the building had weathered vampires, storms, werewolves and even a dragon once. Didn't matter it had only been a hatchling. It was still a dragon.

He glanced at the small horn that had come from the creature, mounted proudly behind him. It was about the only place in the entire building that was kept clean and free of grime and dust. He would take the mounting down again tonight and lovingly polish it. He'd paid good money to have the dragonslayer robbed to get this.

The doors suddenly slammed open and he looked over casually to tell the newcomer to close the door. Despite his questionable work ethic, he didn't want to add wet to the darkness.

Standing, framed in the lightning flashes that struck the dark night sky, stood a woman. Not an uncommon thing - but what she looked like was. She was barely clothed, not in the revealing sense, but in the sense that most of her clothing was in scraps that barely draped over her slender form. She was taller than most women he'd seen... and the white cloth was soon revealed to be soaked dark with something he suspected was actually blood.

She panted in the doorway for a second, then came stumbling in. The light from the fireplace revealed her raven dark hair hanging limply on her shoulders, but hid the fiery red tint to her eyes. Stumbling in further, she dragged herself, panting and gasping, past the patrons (who had all frozen in either shock or curiosity) and dumped herself at the feet of a man that had been sitting in the corner for a long while now.

"Master.... I have failed...." she spoke through a mouthful of blood, and then collapsed.

Orin blinked - his wife came out briefly to see what was happening and then disappeared with a shrug of her own. They'd seen stranger. And it was none of their business. Whistling, he went back to 'work' and studiously kept his eyes away from the pair.

He was a fairly tall man, even though most wouldn't know it. He was devilishly handsome too, even though the dark hood he wore obscured much of his face. Still, the patrons would have been hard pressed to describe him if they had tried, not for his position in the darkened room, nor the hood and cloak, or even for his quiet and unobtrusive nature. People simply didn't realize he was there when he didn't want them too.

The man would have waited in silent bliss, unoticed by the trash and scum all about him but no, this woman, this servant had to practically dance up to him and fall at his feet. The proverbial sign pointing straight to him.

Three long and awkward seconds passed before there was any reaction to the woman, now staining the already tarnished and stained floor boards red with her blood, before there was movement. The man's hand rose and reached into his hood, slowly, slowly.... until his thumb and forfinger clamped around the bridge of his nose in embarrasment. There was a deep and unapproving sigh before a deep and lilting voice whispered to Orin..

"Methinks we shall need a room. Someplace private perhaps?"

Orin avoided looking too deeply into the man's cowl. He had made that mistake once before with another of his patrons and it had ended with three broken ribs and a warning that wood burns easily. He may not have looked it, but he was smart enough to learn from his mistakes.

Nodding his head, he gestured vaguely up the stairs. Find an empty one up there. Two gold per night. Placing the dirty glass down, he looked at the man, indirectly, "Up front."

When he was given the payment, he paid no futher heed of what went on. He did give one worried glance towards the girl. Honestly, she had a nice form, something of a dancer to her. Idly he wondered if she did dance... and if.... shaking his head, he discarded the idea to poach the girl from the mysterious man.

The woman herself only barely groaned, moving jerkily and stiffly after the man. She did not speak further - but it was clear she deferred to him. She herself did not seem overly concerned about her own state of... wellbeing.

He stood and led the way, uncerimoniously dropping two golden Crowns on the tabletop as he passed.

He simply stepped over and past the woman, gliding silently towards and up the stairs, simply expecting to be followed by his lesser. He did hold the door open once he reached to loft and its three tiny rooms, but there was no gentlemanly demeanor in his actions. No ther disapproval practically rolled off from him, to those who had the means or werwithal to notice.

The door closed behind the woman as she limped in. there was utter darkness for a few moments until a metalic scraping sound and a few sparks was witnessed. Soon after the single lamp in the room began to glow, casting the man's features into sinister paches of darkness and deeper darkness.

He turned and stared for long, silent moments at her before doing or saying anything. A single step brought him close and with ine hand, reached out, grabbed the neckline of the ragged shirt and tor it free, revealing the woman's torso. Hidden eyes roved up and down her shape. He had, in the past sampled her, in many different ways, but none of those ways were in his mind now. Instead his keen eyes examined the many long cuts here and there about her body.

"We are away from prying eyes." he said coldly. "Use your gifts and stop leaking on the damnable floor like a pitiable mortal!"

The woman flinched away from his hand. Yes he had sampled her before, and just the others, he had not particularily cared about her body as other lovers might have. But that man was not a mere lover, and she had been ordered to obey him as her own master - so she let him rip the shreds from her body and examine here.

There was no shyness there. No heat that flamed her cheeks at being revealed thusly so. She simply stood, slightly crooked as her left knee was actually broken as was her foot in several places. She silently stared at the floor and allowed him look, occassionally wincing in pain.

As her blood dripped to the floor, she heard his voice - his tone turning her winces into shivers and his command bringing a flinch.

Closing her eyes breifly, she folded herself onto the floor, crumpling artfully before him as she huddled on the floor. Her tears of pain silent and running freely. "I... I... cannot...." she stumbled over the words, gasping for breath.

"I... the Aires will not listen to my commands..." she gasped and shuddered, sprawling suddenly and slipping in the blood in her prostration, "Please.... heal me Master... the pain..." she cried out as a spasm took her back her eyes rolled up into her head as the poison began to take true effect.

He knelt down next to her, squatting down but not touching the floor as she began to writhe about.

"Mortal bodies are so frail, so succeptable, yes?" he asked her, his voice part mocking, part educating. "Did you not ask for this assignment? This choice? Did you not take this body for what it might experience? Do you not also not wish to experience mortal death as well?"

He stood back up, paitently.

"How ever shall you learn my dear, if you do not wish to experience everything?"

Stretching out a hand, she tried to touch him, but knew that she could not without his permission. Now she knew why the Aires would not listen to her. She had had to be mortal for this mission, had had to be something she had not been for a very, very long time.

"Please..." her voice turning pleading, "Please.... I don't... heal me Master... Maaaaaster...." she groaned and shuddered again, still having the presence of mind not to actually touch him. But her body ached, and her muscles were on fire. Her bones were cracked and agony spilt into her body.

"I tried..." somewhere she knew this was his punishment for failing, "I tried... the witch... she was too strong... PLEASE!" she begged and sobbed with the pain, knowing that his hold on her was the only thing keeping her alive. No mere mortal could survive what she had... and yet.

"PLEASE!"

He sighed again. He really did not like seeing her in this position, what she had been reduced to or the lenghts she was going through to achieve her ends...or not.

"Oh very well." he said, as if finally giving into a petulent child. He reached out and simply touched her forehead with one outreaching finger, pressing down on her between the eyes for a few seconds. The woman gasped as light flared behind her eyes and warmth and calm flowed through her head, down her neck and into her torso, each ripple soothing and healing her damaged figure until the wave of energy reached the soles of her feet and disapated.

There was another long, awkward silence. even the flame in the lamp seemed to flicker, unsure as if it shoudl continue burning or not....

"I am dissapointed." he said quietly.

Laurel gasped as she was suddenly infused with heat and light. She felt herself healing. The cuts and bruises along with her broken bones and flaccid muscle knitting together to once again make a cohesive whole. Her body shuddered once, twice and then was still beneath his finger, her gaze wide and wonderous as she stared up at him as at a holy figure she had seen in the flesh.

"Master..." she breathed. And then it dawned on her and she could see his incredibly handsome face as he frowned down at her. He had taken them both out on a limb and she had failed. Worse, she had failed him.

Shuddering, but this time with fear, she tried to avert her gaze, but his eyes locked her in. "I'm sorry... I... I'm... sorry..." she tried to look away again, but found herself trapped in his gaze.

"I'm sorry...." she whispered and offered up the small green gem she had hanging from a thin chain on her neck. "I am not worthy..." her voice carried pain and disbelief and an incredible sadness.

He did not take the proffered stone, instead simply turning and gliding back to his previous spot next to the lamp.

"Are you not?' he asked. "Do you think perhaps that I should decide if you are or are not worhty of continuing?"

He sighed again. "it is not your percieved failure that disappoints me my dear, but that you choose to quit yourself and fle, to return to what you were instead of what you might become."

"Without pain, there is no rapture, no sorrow, there is no joy." he continued, his tone taking on a schollarly, lecturing edge. "No anguish, there is no satisfaction. Do you understand this?"

She remained in her folded position, though she was still kneeling in a puddle of her own blood. Her fingers lay in her lap and she was finally able to cast her eyes downwards again. It was uncomfortable when she looked into his eyes. There was something there... something she didn't like looking at.

"Master... I know you have given me ample opportunity. I do not see what you see in me. I cannot..." she averted her eyes to the side, avoiding looking at him completely, "Your offer was more than I could have ever wished for, true. But...." she paused, she knew she had a certain amount of leniency when talking to him, but she had to obey him at the same time.

"I do not know how to go on. I do not have the answers... and the fighting! How do mortals live like this? How do they continue to exist when the rip into each other so cruelly?" Her voice dropped to a whisper, "How do they accept such pain?"

Dropping her gaze again, she looked perfectly comfortable, stripped to the waist and folded onto the wooden floorboards. "Such chaos in the mind, Master. I could not focus.... and without the Aires... how do they survive?"
