OOC: This is a thread loosely based on a generic fantasy theme. Anything and everything is possible, magic is common and creatures of all designs reside here. PM if you want to join with a bio - otherwise, read on and I hope you enjoy!

The world is new and magic is rife. Kings and Queens rule their lands with only loose fists and so the kingdoms have degenerated.

Arising from her long enforced slumber, Sabriel awoke to a world that she neither knew or remembered. Her memory was gone and all she could conjure up from the foggy darkness was a name. Sabriel searched long and hard for that name, aquiring experience in combat and a strange power that no other seemed to possess. She controlled the very Darkness itself - her Shadow Power. She met many a dangerous enemy and a warm friend, even found lovers when she needed them. But nothing of her past surfaced and that elusive name was never found.

A year after her search began, she finds herself wandering in a nameless, moonlit wood; the wind sighing through the trees....

Name: Sabriel
Age: Unknown (1) (looks 22)
Race: Vampire
Gender: Female
Hair: Long, mid back, straight, black
Eyes: Jade green
Skin: Pale ivory
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 110 lbs
Clothing: Blood red leather corset, blood leather long pants. Black rope binding. Black leather boots. Long black overcoat.
Weapons: Four daggers - two strapped to each thigh. Scimitar strapped to back diagonally.
Powers: Shadow
Weaknesses: Fire, sunlight

Shafts of moonlight rained down onto the path before her as she wandered somewhat aimlessly under the shadowy canopy of the forest around her. Wind rustled through branches, raising an eery melody to the harmony of woodland night creatures and insects. As light danced before her vampiric eyes, the world was instantly revealed to her and her olfactory senses caught the scent of both the fresh scent of growth and the underlying rot of decay. Her nostrils flared as she scented a small animal in her path, a moment before her eyes saw the squirrel dash across the small hunting track.

Usually she did not keep to roads or tracks of any kind. Vampire slayers were rampant, and while she was more than capable of dealing with them, she rather preferred the solitude of unimpeded travel. Her ears twitched and she swung her head to the side, watching as a bat swooped through the air, disappearing from view a moment later.

Staring at the spot the bat had come from, Sabriel found herself staring into the eyes of a large cat. From its eyes she could tell that it saw her as easily as she saw it - but as she inched her hands towards one of the daggers constantly strapped to her thigh, she paused and cocked her head to the side.

Her fangs grew as her body recognised the scent of blood and prepared to feed. But she was not really hungry, not after the night before last. Her feast was still sitting pretty in her veins and so she could afford to let this potential prey go on its way.

Gathering her Shadows towards herself, she masked the cat's view of her, remaining absolutely still. After a moment more, the cat moved on. Its muscles bunching in powerful strokes as it moved past her and out of view. Easing her hands from the hilt of her dagger, Sabriel pulled her Shadows back and kept walking.

Something felt special. Something about this night was different - from all of this past year, she felt something intangible in the air that made her anticipate every growing moment. She felt in her bones that if she stayed on this path, something would happen. She could only pray that it happened before dawn break.

Name: Kaibou

Age: Roughly 19-20

Race: Half wolf demon

Gender: Male

Hair: Longish and shaggy, dusting his shoulders in a deep shade of black.

Eyes: Golden and rich, generally soft and with an innocent naiveté, that take in a lot, but rarely sees it for what it is.

Skin: Normal?

Height: 5'4"

Weight: 120?

Clothing: A shirt and pants generally, usually in earthy tones, brown or green.

Weapons: Teeth and claws

Powers: He's fast mostly, and stronger than the average human, but weaker than most basic level supernatural beings.

Weaknesses: He doesn't like 'scary' things. And humans. He doesn't like them at all. And he doesn't like seeing his own blood.

Other: He has wolf ears and a tail, telling his heritage, though not in a color most expect, they're technicolor magenta, but don't call them pink, he gets very offended.

~*~

Nighttime was generally safety to him, and it allowed him to travel and keep relatively on his own. He didn't usually run into things that could hurt him, and if he did, he generally climbed up a tree where he couldn't be gotten at, so he was able to avoid any trouble that came his way. He didn't like meeting people for the most part, for that reason he avoided roads, and cities, and places where humans congregated, preferring to keep to himself and live in the trees that provided safety on so many nights. There were nights, however, similar to this one, he had to seek refuge in warmer places, for fear of freezing to death, which wasn't likely to happen, really, but it was better to be safe than sorry.

So tonight he awoke, hunkered beneath the roots of a very large tree, his body heat warming the space and radiating around the bottom of the tree as he woke. He gave a slight stretch, the space was tight and had he been any bigger he would not have been able to fit, and he turned, pulling himself out of the ground with a luxuriant stretch this time. He felt several satisfying cricks along his back and he sighed, shaking out his ears and his body as he pulled himself out. He stood slowly, his ears pricking as he quickly took in the sights and sounds of the forest.

He blinked and hurried, bounding up into the nearest tree to get a view of what was going on around him, when he spotted the woman. His ears pricked towards her, his mouth turning down, his brows furrowing, he made a note to avoid her and he slid down, his claws biting into the tree trunk as he turned and landed on his hands, pulling his feet up beneath him so he could stand and jog away from her.

Sabriel wandered quietly on her way, her senses attuned to the night and her surroundings, the feeling of 'specialness' getting stronger with each step she took. Breathing in the scent of the forest, her mind clouded for a moment and she wondered briefly at these dizzy spells. They did not seem to be connected with her Hunger, yet they made her weak and vulnerable at the oddest of times. It had come to be quite annoying.

As she stood still and silent for a moment, a movement caught her peripheral vision. Then a scent wafted towards her. It was slightly feral, intelligent though, and wolfen. And it smelled.... afraid.

As she stood there, sorting through the scents, the creature slid from a tree, straightening with its back to her and began to jog away. It did not bother her in the least - she had met many creatures that simply existed to be by themselves. She didn't think it rude... just cautious. And so she didn't do anything. Simply watched as it put some distance between her and it.

All of a sudden.....

Name: Unknown
Age: Unknown
Race: Monster
Gender: Unknown
Hair: None
Eyes: Three in number, all red
Skin: Pale metal grey
Height: 7'3"
Weight: 450 lbs
Clothing:None
Weapons: Large beak in middle of 'face' and ten long tentacles with claw tips. Poison tipped.
Powers: Unknown
Weaknesses: Unknown
Physical Description: Tall, many tentacled creature. Has no legs - simply moves about by sliding its massive bulk along the ground. Does not speak - it growls and grunts. Two eyes above the beak with a third in the back of its 'head'.

Lumbering into view, the Thing came right across Kaibou's jogging path. By accident, a nearby branch caught its massive bulk and snapped into its face, scraping across its beak like mouth. It roared - its tiny red eyes glinting as it spied the young wolfling.

Without much warning, it shot two tentacles towards Kaibou - growling as it did so, on tentacle rubbing its beak. The claws gleamed black in the shafts of moonlight beneath the trees and its massive bulk was deceptively fast as it also rushed the wolfling.

He froze when he saw the tentacle creature, his eyes wide and glinting, hoping to back away, and sneak off, unfortunately, things didn't go as planned, instead the big thing turned its beady red gaze to him. He gulped, and took a step back, his ears twisting back against his head and he growled, low and terrified. He twitched, his eyes flashing to the two tentacles that lashed out at him. He yelped and leapt back and away, whirling and lunging for the nearest tree and bolted up into it.

The creature came after him and he gulped, turning and wanting to bolt, but the creature was persistent and barred his path with its tentacles. He growled, baring his teeth, his ears fell back again before they flicked forward. He moved to the side as another tentacle came after him, seeing the claws at their ends. He yelped dropping down from the tree, it would impede him more than it would aid him.

He dodged to the side as the monster darted out at him again and he snarled, leaping at the creature and burying his claws into the beasties head to try and kill the creature to keep himself safe.

At first Sabriel did nothing. To tell the truth, it was none of her business anyway. She simply would have to circumvent the happenings going on and make sure that the creature didn't notice her.

Unfortunately for her, her heart went out to the little creature that at first wanted to run away, but now began to ferociously attack the monster. The wolfen cub was clearly no match for it, but he was determined all the same to do some damage.

Magenta ears twitched and a magenta tail flashed as he tried to bury his claws into the creature's flesh.

It swung around, trying to dislodge the cub off its bulky head. Its eyes swivelled upwards, as its beak gaped open. It seemed more annoyed than frightened however, of the cub's attentions. Swinging its tentacles around, it began to try to pluck the wolfen boy off its head.

It seemed to be very careful not to pierce its skin with its claws.

As for Kaibou's claws - they weren't even making a scratch.

Sabriel sighed and placed a hand on her hip, tapping her fingers against her pants as she tried to make up her mind. The kid had done nothing wrong by her - and the monster was clearly out of his depth. But then again, she was a vampire. Hated and sought out throughout the realms. What if she rescued the pup and then had to kill him because he attempted to get her?

Pursing her lips, Sabriel sighed again and slipped two daggers from their sheaths. She supposed she could help, even if it was from far away.

Spinning on the ball of her right foot, she swung around and slungshot her daggers towards the creature. She was a good aim, and she was gunning for its belly, trying to avoid the savage little cub.

It reared up as it sensed danger approaching - just as the twod daggers bounced harmlessly off its skin. With a roar, it pushed its bulk around to eye the woman that stood defiant on the path not too far away. Further than the cub had been, but not far enough.

With an enraged grunt, it began to bear down on the vampiress - taking Kaibou with it.

Kaibou snarled when he realized that his claws did no damage to the beast's skin, no matter how hard he slammed his claws and raked them across the armored flesh. He ducked beneath a tentacle that lunged at him, pressing himself against the domed head of the creature as it moved. He climbed up higher, if the skin didn't dent, he'd go for something softer... like the eyes. Eyes were soft and squishy.

He yelped and clung as he felt the beast rear up suddenly and he heard the faintest 'ping' of metal bouncing off something, likely this monster as it turned, Kai still dodging the tentacles and reaching for those beady eyes to try and pry them out of its head, he, unfortunately, was just shy of them. He growled and made a faint 'hurk' noise as the tentacled creature lurched towards the figure in the distance. That woman he'd tried to get away from before. Interesting.

He hissed, while he'd let himself get distracted for a moment, just a moment, the creature had nicked him, just slightly, on his upper thigh. It burned, but he shoved it to the back of his mind as he reached forward a bit further to swipe at those eyes.

Kai's swing struck true, but unfortunately for both the vampiress and the wolfling, blinding the monster only enraged it further. It swung its tentacles in wide, erratic arks, it movements angrily pained as it howled in lament to its single lost eye.

But it still bore down on Wraith, having been headed in that direction before it had been blinded. Roaring a challenge, it used it other, equally good, senses to track the cub as he scrabbled all over the bulk that was its head.

Once again, three razor tipped, venom dripping tentacles wound their way to Kai.

Seeing the creature come rushing at her, Wraith ran to the side, using the trees on either side of the path to shield herself. She needn't have bothered because as she watched, the wolfling struck at the monster's eye, effectively blinded it.

Stopping beside the creature in the trees, Wraith watched the monster stumbling, rushing, about, going to take its anger out on the nearest object. The young cub.

Wraith hissed as she made yet another quick decision. Drawing two of her remaining daggers, she threw them, acting to deflect two of the arching tentacles from reaching Kaibou. They struck, and spun away, having met something denser than they. But the tentacles stopped for a fraction of a second.

Enough for Wraith to shout, "Run! While its blind!" She readied her last dagger to deflect the last of the tentacles but she waited for Kai to move before unleashing the blade.

He yelped as it swung around and reached for him and he heard the screeching and the howling, from the beast itself. His tail swept back and forth, his tail tucking back beneath himself. He dodged the tentacles and heard the shout.

He whirled, leaping away, from the creature, his tail getting in the way and tripping him up as he fell. He rolled, end over end, tail over teakettle, until he flopped onto his stomach. He groaned, shaking his head, and pushing to his feet, "I'm off." He looked around, fixating on the woman. His ears pricked forward, "Who are you?" He asked, his ears twisting back, "Later." He pushed to his feet quickly and turned, looking back at the creature.

As Kai bounced off the creature, the vampiress couldn't quite decide if Kai had done it on purpose or the creature had flung the wolfling off, the blade left her hand, striking at a tentacle, interrupting its path. The creature roared and she shook her head, hearing the cubling ask about her. She opened her mouth to chastise him for thinking such foolish thoughts while their lives were in danger - and for not running far enough - but he simply cut her off and stood as if ready to fight the beast again.

She rolled her eyes and took off at a run, her speed carrying her swiftly to his side while she scooped him up in her arms and ran off again. Her strength was to be marvelled at. Kaibou was not heavy, but neither was he light. Yet she cradled him in her arms as if carrying a babe. Her breath did not come in gasps, it seemed she hardly breathed at all and her pale face floated above his, concern etched on her features.

Minutes later, after her flight, they would both hear the receding roars and cries of the tentacled beast. She stopped then, letting him down. "Forgive me, Youngling, but you were not fast enough. Now... now we can run together."

With that, she set off at a trot, making sure he could keep up. There was no question of whether he would follow her, she seemed to take it for granted. Casting an eye over her shoulder, she listened for a moment and nodded to herself, "We are not far enough away yet."
