Prologue

The wind tugged at her dark hair, Tendrils of Darkness snatching at the wisps that blew across her face. The midnight black tipped with dark magenta contrasting with her pale, expressionless face. Her dark eyes were somewhat vacant as she stared into the Shadow Void beyond her. Her form utterly still; un-breathing; un-living; in-human.

She held an unhesitating hand to the Dark, her full luscious red lips parting into a dark smile as a Shadow Tendril wrapped itself around her hand. Its undulating soft velvet feel washing unnatural warmth over her long cold body. She smiled wider when she turned her palm upwards and the Tendril seemed to pool and settle in her outstretched hand.

The Black Void beyond seemed to sigh softly...

From behind her another shadowy figure emerged.
"Wraith," its voice intruded into her mind, a liquid smooth rumble that seemed to echo endlessly in her head. Her smile grew wider she felt the comfortable presence now sitting on his haunches beside her.

She pulled her hand back, the Tendril whining and sliding back the Dark Void beyond them. She did not turn her head, only her eyes moved to seek his form. "You know not to call me that, brother." she said softly, her voice a lighter contrast to his deep baritone level.

The giant Wolf regarded her with a deep soulful stare, "And what am I supposed to call you but by your own name?" came his deep voice reverberating richly in her mind.
She smiled, her eyes never leaving his dark shadowy form, "You know what we are now, Deinare. As I am Seinari; Wolfsister," she almost whispered too low for him to hear, but he knew what it was she had said. She had said it too often for him not to know.

He growled low in his throat and stood back on all fours, "Deinare; Fangbrother! We should not have to bear the names of exiles!" he huffed and then promptly sat back and howled. Long, low and full of despair. If Seinari had been able to cry, she would have at least shed a tear. As it was, she kept staring ahead at the Dark Void.

Suddenly Deinare stopped howling and gave her another soul searching gaze. "Do you remember sister? Do you remember how we came to be like this?" he suddenly asked, as he did always every night.

She nodded distantly and a Tendril came to swirl briefly around her then disappeared back into the Void. "Yes, Deinare, I remember." she slowly took a single step forward, one more and she would be swallowed by the Void, to be trapped in its endless space for eternity. Not that she was not trapped for all eternity in hell now.

In a low soft voice she recited what she did nightly to him in answer to his nightly question.

"When the night unveils, two beings will emerge. One to be Deinare; Fangbrother, and one to be Seinari; Wolfsister.

Born of two worlds, yet of the same blood. To be enemies eternal, yet family.

From the night they come, her of Darkness and he of Light.

Together for eternity, apart for all time."

She stared at the Dark Void and seemed to shudder slightly, the Ancient Prophecy recited. She stepped back and then looked up, hissing lightly. "The day comes Deinare." she said softly, her eyes already beginning to close.

Deinare stood on all fours and nodded his large wolf's head. "I will return soon, sister." He walked back into the dark behind her. She slowly turned and watched him go from her sight and hearing, running away from her. Running away from what he was about to do.

She remembered that once she had asked why he had never let her see him transform, he had replied, his eyes sagely looking into hers, "Because sister, I don't want to give you nightmares," then he had vanished. She watched him go now, accepting that she would never see it. She sadly stared after him her eyes closing slowly as the Sleep came over her, the Sleep of the Daylight, whispering softly to herself, "I am the nightmare"

Chapter One

The night was cold, it was wet and the occasional flashes of light from the heavens did nothing to lighten the oppressive mood inside the small hut. The family of four sat huddled on the ground, trying to ignore the hole in the roof that allowed water to splash down over them. The children whimpered with both fear and cold, their stomachs growling with hunger and their mother tried to hush them, the father staring blankly at nothing.

The glow of three candles set on the dining table in the middle of the living quarters of the hut illuminated a lone figure. He had long, wavy dark hair that fell to his shoulders, a slightly long nose with a narrow jaw. His eyes were alight with evil and they seemed to glow in the candlelight a firey yellow. He, infact, looked rather wolfish.

He leaned against the table, leisurely whittling a small peice of wood. It didn't seem as if there was going to be any shape to it, it was just a nice way to pass the time before his sister joined them. He glanced over at the shivering family and grinned, his extended canines glimmering. The humans tried to withdraw further away from him, but the wall at their backs prevented their escape. The vampire at the table, prevented their escape through the door as well. They had tried, but in the end they realised that he had just been toying with them.

The door squeaked and they all looked as one to the entrance.

A tall, raven haired woman entered, ducking under the low lintel. Her eyes were a sharp green, her mouth a red rosebud. Her skin was pale; too pale and when she smiled, the same extended canines showed and glittered. She was dressed in black silks and lace. Her gloves crawling delicately up to her elbows and her high heeled shoes clicked on the wooden floor boards.

She stepped into the hovel and smiled as her brother stood up straighter, putting away his knife and whittled stick. He waved at the shivering family and grinned, his fangs gleaming in the candle light, "I kept them just the way you like them sis, chilled to perfection,"

"Ahh my brother, how delightfully thoughful of you," she smiled and slowly advanced on the huddling family. They tried to shrink away from her, knowing that their end would come soon. The children began to cry loudly, the mother begging for mercy. The father still just stared into space, though his arms curled protectively around the now wailing woman.

The female vampire smiled wickedly, "Oh how delicious!" she exclaimed, moving her brother away, "No, no my dear. I like it when they scream."
He shrugged and went back to the table, leaning against it and watched as his sister fed from the family, enjoying herself immensely. He grinned and pulled out his knife, beginning to whittle the wood again. "Do leave some for me, will you sister?" he asked quietly and just barely heard the grunt in reply, she was so busy feeding.

A moment later she looked up, licking the blood from around her mouth, "I'll leave you the woman, but the children are mine," then she bent her head again and sank her teeth into the youngest.

He chuckled, "Such a sweet tooth my dear sister...."
